Geocaching in New Orleans 2026: Where to Play With a Crew
Updated October 2026 · First posted October 14, 2026
If you play location games in New Orleans, geocaching is the easiest one to start this weekend. No raid timers and no team politics: just a dot on the map, a hidden container, and a reason to walk parts of the city you usually skip.
It’s also better with a crew. Caches hide in plain sight, extra eyes spot them faster, and in the big parks walking with friends is simply smarter.

Before you go
Pick an app, open the live map and walk to a cache near you. Sign the log, log it in the app and put everything back exactly as you found it. Two rules matter in New Orleans: stay on public paths, and leave things alone. Don’t climb or damage the live oaks, private courtyards aren’t part of the game, and no cache is worth trespassing for.
7 starter areas
These are areas, not specific caches, which come and go. Open your app’s live map in each one to see what’s active now.
1
Wide paths · daytime crowds
City Park
The biggest green space in the city and the friendliest place to learn. Lots of room to wander without bothering anyone. A good first outing with a full crew.
2
Easy loop · oak-lined streets
Audubon Park and Uptown
The loop around Audubon Park and the streets nearby make an easy walking route. Many oaks along St. Charles still hold Carnival beads, and photographing them makes a fun side quest.
3
Daylight only · busy
The French Quarter
Full of stops and story-style routes, but crowded and distracting. Go in daylight, put your phone away between stops and keep the group together.
4
Quiet · residential
Garden District
Quieter streets and clear sightlines, good for an afternoon. Respect the residential blocks: sidewalks and corners only, and no leaning over gates.
5
Open sky · strong GPS
The Lakefront
Open sky means your location is more accurate here than under downtown buildings. Great for longer walks.
6
Street art · go before dark
Bywater and Marigny
Street art, corner stores and plenty of character. A good late-afternoon route; bring the crew and head home before the light goes.
7
Easy to follow · busy path
Lafitte Greenway
A straight, well-used walking and biking path from near the French Quarter into Mid-City. Easy to follow, steady foot traffic, and you can leave at any cross street. A great route for first-timers.
Make it a crew outing
Geocaching splits up naturally: one person navigates, one spots and one logs. Bigger groups find caches faster and stay safer, especially in big parks and after dark. Every week, Krewe of Play emails the games happening in the city that weekend, and players find a crew in our Facebook group.
